Here we have put together 4 tips to aide you in kicking the habit – when setting up your appointment to quit, keep these in mind.
Tip number 1 – Believe in yourself
Automotive and assembly line industrialist Henry Ford said “Whether You Think You Can or think you can’t, You are Right” In other words, if you think you can’t, it will stop you from succeeding. If you think you can, it will drive you to success. This is as true as ever regarding smoking cessation. So believe in yourself – so many other people have quit cigarettes for good, so why shouldn’t you be able to?
The second tip – replace the habit
It’s difficult to just stop smoking – in facts it’s so hard that you will most likely fail in you don’t come up with a replacement. It can be a carrot, a lollipop, chewing gum, or something else you have in your hands and mouth. Just make sure that you have something, or the habit will draw you back and you will fail.
Advice number three – stop with the excuses
If you are like 99 per cent of the rest of the smokers you probably have a lot of excuses as to why you shouldn’t give up smoking – or at least why it’s not so dangerous as you might think. “My aunt smoked 20 cigarettes since she was 14 and she lived to be 84.” Well of course that’s great for her, but does that mean that the same will be true for you? You see, my aunt was driving drunk 3 evenings a week and she never got into an accident – does that give me a pass to drive drunk myself? Not really, does it? Doing something stupid isn’t okay just because someone you know did it and didn’t get hurt – so stop with the excuses and stop with the cigarettes.
And never mind the weight – a lot of smokers put off the smoking cessation because they don’t want to gain weight. “Being fat isn’t good for your health either” they say. But guess what – in order for fatness to be as dangerous as smoking you need to gain a minimum of 20 kg. The average smoker gains 0-4 kg during a smoking cessation so that’s another excuse down the drain.
The 4th tip – just do it
Yes, I know, we are stealing from Nike here, but the slogan just captures everything there is to a smoking cessation – just do it. Of cause you should prepare yourself just a little bit, but don’t put it off for too long. When you read this, you have exactly one week, and then you should smoke your last cigarette. That’s enough time to make a battle-plan, find a substitution and prepare yourself mentally.
Just do it – and good luck with it.
